Biographical Information

Mal Moss was a pitcher for nine years (1924-1932), six in college (1924-1929) and six in the minors (1927-1932), with a cup of coffee in the majors in 1930. Moss received his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1929. He broke into Organized Baseball at age 22 with the Memphis Chickashaws in the Southern Association (1927), going 13-3 with a 2.73 ERA, the 4th-best mark in the league. He moved up to the Louisville Colonels in the American Association (AA) (1928-1929) and went 19-40 over the two-year period, with ERAs of 3.47 and 4.80.

In 1930 he pitched with the Minneapolis Millers (5-3, 6.86) and the Chicago Cubs. He appeared in 12 games, all but one in relief, for the Cubs in 1930, walking 14 and striking out four in 18⅔ innings with an ERA of 6.27 and a WHIP of 1.714. He ended his MLB career on August 13 and returned to the minors with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League (1931-1932); ending his baseball career at age 27. He was 15-14, 4.55 for LA in '31 and 11-8, 4.70 the next season. Overall in the minors, he was (63-68).

Moss served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (BN) as a Lieutenant Commander. He was an attorney with a Chicago, IL law firm. He died at age 68 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, GA of a heart attack on February 6, 1983 and is buried at Beaufort National Cemetery, in Beaufort, SC.
