Biographical Information[edit]

Luis Martínez has pitched in the minors and for the Venezuelan national team.

He was signed by Chicago White Sox scouts Marco Paddy and Omar Sanchez in late 2011. [1] A fractured right elbow kept him off the field until 2014, though. [2] Skipping to US-based leagues, he split that summer between the AZL White Sox (3-2, 4.09, 40 K in 33 IP) and Great Falls Voyagers (2-1, 1.42 in 5 starts).

Moving up to the Kannapolis Intimidators in 2015, he was 4-14 with a 5.38 ERA. He tied Justin Kamplain for the most losses in the South Atlantic League and led White Sox farmhands, two more than Tyler Danish. That winter, he was 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his Venezuelan League debut for the Navegantes del Magallanes. Back with Kannapolis in 2016, he more than doubled his K total as he went 8-9 with a 3.81 ERA and 141 K in 137 IP. He was 3rd in the ChiSox chain in whiffs, behind Jordan Stephens and Matt Cooper. He tied for 10th in the SAL in wins and was 3rd in strikeouts, trailing Jose Taveras and future Venezuelan team teammate Cristian Alvarado. He saw little work that winter (4.32 ERA in 8 1/3 IP).

In '17, he was with Kannapolis (8-2, 3.19 im 14 G) and the Winston-Salem Dash (0-2, 9.00 in 5 G). He tied Dane Dunning for 6th in the chain in wins. He had a 9-7, 4.47 record for the 2018 Dash, striking out 113. He tied for 3rd in wins in the Carolina League, behind Alvarado and Wil Crowe. He also tied Brandon Bailey for 6th in strikeouts. Among Pale Hose farmhands, he tied for 6th in wins and was 9th in strikeouts. Back in the bullpen for the winter, he was 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA for Magallanes.

Chicago also decided to move him to relief and he was 5-2 with four saves and a 4.26 ERA in 39 games for the 2019 Birmingham Barons, whiffing 73 in 61 1/3 innings. He was 8th in the Southern League in games pitched. He was 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA in winter ball for the Navegantes.

A late addition to Venezuela's squad for the 2019 Premier 12, relieving Argenis Angulo in the 6th inning of a scoreless duel with Taiwan's Yi Chang. He went 1-2-3 against Chih-Chieh Su, Hung-Yu Lin and Chun-Hsiu Chen (the latter by K) then retired former big leaguer Chin-Lung Hu to open the 7th. Miguel Socolovich relieved and Taiwan began the game's scoring after Luis had left. [3]
