Biographical Information

Starting pitcher Logan Verrett made his major league debut in 2015.

Verrett was 3-0 with a 1.28 ERA as a junior, fanning 41 in 27 1/3 IP. He was 18-0 with a 0.67 ERA and 167 K as a senior, leading the nation's high schoolers in wins. He also hit .455 with 7 homers and 46 runs. He was named All-State. As a wide receiver in football, he was All-district. His high school finished 9th in the nation that year according to Collegiate Baseball rankings. He was the second freshman in Baylor history to begin 7-0. He finished 7-1 with 3 saves and a 5.13 ERA, fanning 64 in 51 3/ IP. He had a 5-3, 3.28 record with 97 K in 90 2/3 IP as a sophomore. He tied Chance Ruffin and Michael Wacha for 6th in the Big 12 Conference in strikeouts. As a junior, Logan was 7-6 with a 2.93 ERA and struck out 96 in 101 1/3 IP. He was 5th in the Big 12 in whiffs. Among Baylor pitchers who did not go four years, he finished third in career strikeouts, behind Jason Jennings and Kip Wells. His 3.52 career ERA in Big 12 play was third in school annals.

He was taken by the New York Mets in the 3rd round of the 2011 amateur draft, the 101st pick overall and the Mets' 4th following Brandon Nimmo, Michael Fulmer and Cory Mazzoni. He was signed by scout Max Semler for a reported $425,000 at the August 15th deadline.

The hurler split 2012 between the Savannah Sand Gnats (3-2, 3.06) and St. Lucie Mets (2-0, 2.09), going a combined 5-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 17 starts. In 103 1/3 innings, he allowed only 13 walks and 87 hits, while striking out 93 batters. He was 12-6 with a 4.25 ERA in 24 starts for the Binghamton Mets in 2013, walking only 31 batters in 146 innings. He led the Eastern League in WHIP and tied Jack Snodgrass and Matt Packer for the win lead. He was 8th in whiffs (132), between Matt Barnes and Marcus Stroman. Among Mets farmhands, he tied Rafael Montero for second in wins behind Gabriel Ynoa and was third in whiffs behind Montero and Noah Syndergaard.

He opened 2014 in AAA with the Las Vegas 51s. After the season, he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 Rule V Draft, then claimed on waivers by the Texas Rangers just before the start of the 2015 season, when he failed to make the Orioles' roster. He made his big league debut on April 8th, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief in a 10-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Fellow Rule V draftee Delino DeShields Jr. also made his debut for the Rangers in that game. He was not long for the Rangers system, however, as the Rangers returned him to the Mets in early May. He was recalled to the majors by New York on June 17th upon Akeel Morris' demotion after an unsavory performance in which Morris allowed five runs in two thirds of an inning in his big league debut. After another trip to the minors, Verrett returned to the Mets to earn his first big league win on August 23rd when he made a spot start on the road against the Colorado Rockies in order to give Matt Harvey an extra day of rest. He was splendid, giving up only 1 run on 4 hits in 8 innings in a 5-1 win. he went 1-1, 3.03 in 14 games for the Mets, including 4 starts, for a combined line of 1-2, 3.59. he did not pitch in the postseason as the Mets reached the World Series that year.

Logan made the Mets' pitching staff as a reliever at the start of 2016, but after a one-inning appearance on April 10th, he was pressed into starting duty on April 13th when Jacob deGrom had to stay by the side of his hospitalized newborn son. He had an excellent outing, giving up no runs on 3 hits in 6 innings as the Mets won the game 2-1, after he had departed. He was used as a swingman all year, making 12 starts among his 38 appearances. He finished 3-8, 5.20, pitching 91 2/3 innings in the thankless role. His walk rate was quite high, with 34 walks, just below half a batter per inning. After the season, he was purchased by the Orioles and after starting the 2017 season in the minors, was a winner in his debut with the Birds on April 30th. He came on in relief in the 10th inning of a game against the New York Yankees and escaped a bases loaded jam, then was given the win hen his teammates scored three runs in the top of the 11th to win, 7-4.
