Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Kyle Simon had a long professional career after being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles out of the University of Arizona in the 4th round of the 2011 amateur draft. He was 11-3, 2.72 for Arizona in 2011, but only stayed briefly in the Orioles' system. In 2011, he was 1-2, 2.16 in 14 relief appearances between the Aberdeen IronBirds and the Delmarva Shorebirds. In 2012, he started the year with the Frederick Keys of the California League but only went 2-8, 3.96 in 14 starts. On June 30th, he was included in a major league trade alongside Gabriel Lino, heading to the Philadelphia Phillies in return for future Hall of Famer Jim Thome, already 41 years old and in the twilight of a brilliant career. He played for two more teams that season, the Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League for whom he went 3-0, 1.46 in 7 games, and the Reading Phillies of the Eastern League, where he was 1-0, 1.42, pitching only in relief at both stops.
At that point of his career, Kyle seemed destined to reach the majors quickly, having made it to AA in less than two full seasons and having seemingly found a niche as a relief pitcher. However, his 2013 season with Reading was a disappointment, as he went 2-6, 4.45 with 11 saves in 45 outings. He improved to 5-2, 2.64 with 3 saves in 36 games in 2014 to earn his next promotion, finishing the year with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the International League. However, his results in AAA were pretty bad, with an ERA of 9.42 in 10 games. Following the season, he was selected by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, in the 2014 Rule V Draft, but he never played in their organization, being let go at the end of spring training in 2015.
His career was far from over, however, as he soon found work in the independent leagues, suiting up for the Lancaster Barnstormers and the New Britain Bees in 2015 and 2016 respectively, both teams being in the Atlantic League. He was 4-0, 3.16 as a reliever the first year, and 8-6, 2.77 as a starter the second. He pitched three more seasons for New Britain, all as a starter, going 12-11, 8-9, and 1-3. In 2019 he finished the season with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, but he was pretty much done at that point, going 3-10, 4.97 in 15 starts. In addition to this, he played two seasons of winter ball, the first with the Jalisco Charros of the Mexican Pacific League in 2016-17 and the second with the Perth Heat of the Australian Baseball League in 2017-18.
