Crowell went 11-2 with a 3.00 ERA as a college sophomore, finishing third in the Conference USA in both ERA and wins (tied with Henry Bonilla. He was named All-Conference as well as Conference Pitcher of the Year. In 2000, the junior right-hander was even better (13-3, 2.86, 117 K, 27 BB in 138 IP). He led the conference in wins and whiffs and was 4th in ERA. He again was both All-Conference and Conference Pitcher of the Year. He tied for 8th in NCAA Division I in wins. Baseball America named him as an All-American, alongside Kip Bouknight, Lenny DiNardo, Charlie Thames and Justin Wayne.

The Oakland Athletics chose Kyle in the 8th round of the 2000 amateur draft. He was assigned to the Vancouver Canadians and went 4-4 with two saves, a 2.91 ERA, 64 strikeouts and 12 walks in 65 innings. He tied for 9th in the Northwest League in ERA. Crowell fell to 3-10, 5.37 with two saves for the 2001 Modesto A's. In 2002, he moved full-time to relief and did well with Modesto (9-3, 3 Sv, 2.99, 89 K in 72 1/3 IP) and the Sacramento River Cats (1-0, 4.50 in 5 G).

Crowell was again a sharp reliever in 2003, this time with Modesto (2-2, 4 Sv, 1.93, 61 K in 60 2/3 IP) and the Midland RockHounds (0-1, Sv, 3.12). With Midland in 2004, he faded to 2-0, 4.54, though he still fanned over a batter per inning. He spent his third year in a row with Midland in 2005, going 3-1 with a 3.44 ERA. He ended his career in 2006 with the Stockton Ports (2 R in 5 2/3 IP) and Sacramento (4 R in 2 IP).
