Biographical Information[edit]

Kun-yol Lee played for 12 years in the Korea Baseball Organization and later was a coach.

Lee hit .179/.200/.186 in 30 plate appearances and 25 games for the Haitai Tigers in 1986 and .216/.275/.284 in 81 plate appearances over 41 games in 1987. In 1988, he continued to struggle in a bench role (.141/.190/.192 in 85 PA, 55 G). He saw more regular action in 1989, hitting .213/.261/.285 while playing mostly RF. He would alternate primarily between RF, LF and 1B in his career but also filled in at other positions. The Tigers won the Korean Series each of his first four seasons.

The Kwangju native made strides in 1999, hitting .241/.269/.302 in 89 games, mostly at 1B, then slipped to .228/.312/.281 in 98 games in 1991 (Haitai won the 1991 Korean Series). He had his best OBP in 1992, producing at a .270/.341/.338 as a regular, playing in 111 games. He slumped to .228/.300/.301 in 1993 when the team won the 1993 Korean Series.

In 1994, the 31-year-old batted .250/.314/.355 with a career-best 7 homers and 14 doubles. He had his best average and slugging in 1995 (.295/.325/.356). In 1996, he hit .229/.298/.300 and the Tigers won the 1996 Korean Series. He was only 3 for 26 in 1997 as the Tigers took the 1997 Korean Series.

Lee hit .240/.300/.311 in 896 KBO games, with 266 runs and 252 RBI. He hit 30 home runs in 2,401 at-bats.

He then coached for the SK Wyverns in 2000 and was hitting coach for the KIA Tigers (2001-2003, LG Twins (2004-2005) and KIA again (2006-2007). He was head coach of Hwasun High School in 2008. Returning to KIA for a third stint as hitting coach, he served from 2009 through 2012. He then became head coach of Dongguk University in 2013. He guided the South Korean national team to the Gold Medal at the 2015 Universiade.
