Schmidt was All-County in both baseball and football in high school. In junior college, he was All-Conference in 2003, but missed 2004 due to shoulder surgery. In 2005, he hit .418 and won Bay Valley Conference Player of the Year honors. Going on to Arizona, he hit .282 as a redshirt junior. His senior year, he came to UNR and batted .349/.421/.555 with 47 RBI in 59 games. Undrafted, he was signed by Arizona Diamondbacks scout Jim Dedrick.
Schmidt made his pro debut with the 2007 Yakima Bears and hit .250/.291/.421 with 38 strikeouts to four walks. He tied Jonathan Greene for the most errors (9) by a Northwest League backstop that season. In '08, the Californian catcher hit .259/.329/.333 for the South Bend Silver Hawks and .329/.356/.428 for the Visalia Oaks. He split 2009 between the Oaks (.304/.359/.443, 28 doubles) and the AAA Reno Aces (7 for 16, two doubles). He finished 10th in the California League in average.
With the Mobile Bay Bears in 2010, Schmidt produced at a .315/.373/.490 rate with 32 doubles. Among Southern Leaguers with 400+ plate appearances, he was third in average behind Brandon Guyer and Tony Campana. That earned him a September call-up to Arizona. In his MLB debut, he pinch-hit for Juan Gutierrez and drew a walk from Logan Ondrusek.
