Biographical Information[edit]

Katsumi Nakanishi pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Nakanishi was signed by the Daimai Orions in 1956, and he joined the rotation as a rookie. He was 8-11 with a 2.09 ERA, and he led the Pacific League in shutouts with 5 (tied with Takao Kajimoto). Nakanishi improved to 13-4 with a 1.91 ERA in 1957, and he was 10th in wins (tied with Yukio Shimabara and Yoshihiko Taki). Had he qualified, he would have ranked 4th in ERA, between Tetsuya Yoneda and Kajimoto. He slumped to 5-10 with a 3.77 ERA in 1958, and he was 12-6 with a 2.77 ERA in 1959. He tied Shimabara for 9th in wins in 1959.

The Osaka native had his career year in 1960, having a 16-10 record with a 2.13 ERA. He was 3rd in ERA (between Tadashi Sugiura and Tomoo Wako), 7th in wins (17 behind Shoichi Ono) and 10th in innings (between Joe Stanka and Wako). Nakanishi was also selected into the 1960 NPB All-Star Games, and he allowed 2 runs in 3 innings in Game 2. In the 1960 Nippon Series, he completed Game 1 with only a run allowed, but Noboru Akiyama still got the win over him. He then relieved Takashi Nakagawa in the 9th inning of Game 3, but he surrendered a game-winning home run to Akihito Kondo and got the loss again. He pitched 3 shutout innings in Game 4, and the Taiyo Whales swept the Orions.

Nakanishi slumped to 6-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 1961, and his ERA rose to 5.57 in 25 appearances in 1962. He was 6-8 with a 2.96 ERA in 1963, then he had a 5-9 record with a 3.21 ERA in 1964. Nakanishi only pitched 7 games in 1965 then he announced his retirement. He was the pitching coach for the Orions in 1966, scouted for them from 1967 to 1970 and coached their minor league team from 1971 to 1973. Nakanishi then worked as pitching coach for the minor league team of the Kintetsu Buffaloes from 1974 to 1981 and from 1984 to 1985. He also coached their big league team from 1982 to 1983 and for the Nankai Hawks from 1986 to 1990.

Overall, Nakanishi was 72-70 with a 2.83 ERA, struck out 670 and pitched 1,257 2/3 innings in 10 years in NPB.
