Biographical Information[edit]

Kang-ryul Kim has played in the Korea Baseball Organization.

Kim was selected by the Doosan Bears in the 4th round of the 2007 KBO draft, and he only pitched one inning in 2008. He then missed the next two years due to military service, and he also represented Korea in the 2010 Intercontinental Cup. His lone appearance came in their 17-2 win over Hong Kong, when he struck out 2 of 3 batters he faced to get the win over Tsz-Chun Heung. After returning, Kim had a 3.91 ERA in 19 appearances in 2011, and he pitched 30 games with a 2.88 ERA in 2012. He recorded a 3.20 ERA in 17 games in 2013, but his ERA rose to 8.10 in 14 games in 2014. Kim had a solid 2.45 ERA in his first 16 games in 2015, but he had a torn Achilles tendon on May 2 and his season ended. Kim struggled again in 2016, and his ERA was 5.14 in 25 games.

The Goyang native came back in 2017, and he pitched 70 games with a 3.44 ERA and 12 holds. He was 3rd in appearances, tied with Sang-hwa Lee. He pitched 2 shutout innings to get a save in 2017 Korean Series Game 1, then he allowed a 2-run shot to Ji-wan Na in Game 3. Kim pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings in Game 5, but the Bears still lost a 7-6 game (and the Series) to the KIA Tigers. He notched 11 holds in 65 games with a 4.62 ERA in 2018, but he tore his Achilles tendon again on October 23. He missed the 2018 Korean Series, and he didn't pitch any games in 2019. Kim returned in 2020, and he recorded a 3.54 ERA in 30 relief outings. He was named the closer in 2021, and he collected 21 saves with a 2.09 ERA in 50 games. Kim was 6th in saves, between Woo-Suk Go and Yong-chan Lee. In the 2021 Korean Series, he pitched 2 shutout innings in Game 3, but he then allowed a 2-run homer to Jared Hoying in Game 4; the KT Wiz swept the Bears.

Kim was bothered by a shoulder injury in 2022, so he only got 9 saves with a 4.29 ERA in 26 games. His ERA was 4.21 in 32 games in 2023, and he collected 12 holds with a 3.00 ERA in 53 appearances in 2024. He was the first Bears pitcher to stay with the team for 18 years.
