Biographical Information

Juan Herrera peaked at AA. He also played for the Dominican national team.

Herrera was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians. He hit well as a utility infielder for the 2011 DSL Indians at .297/.384/.391. Coming to the US in 2012, he continued to showcase OBP skills with a batting line of .283/.395/.391 for the AZL Indians. He opened 2013 with similar numbers for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (.275/.366/.369 in 39 G) then was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for major leaguer Marc Rzepczynski. He split the remainder of the summer between the State College Spikes (1 for 15, 2 BB) and Peoria Chiefs (.271/.333/.318 in 23 G). He finally settled down at a position in 2014, fielding .928 at SS between the Chiefs (.274/.320/.364 in 101 G) and Palm Beach Cardinals (.194/.219/.194 in 10 G). He stole 28 bases in 41 tries; only C.J. McElroy had more by a Cardinals farmhand. Baseball America rated him as the best defensive infielder in the St. Louis system.

In 2015, he hit .265/.315/.292 for Palm Beach, with only 5 extra-base hits in 54 games. His offensive woes picked up in 2016 with Palm Beach (.237/.288/.361 in 25 G) and the Springfield Cardinals (.167/.197/.200 in 46 G). He made his Dominican Winter League debut with the Estrellas Orientales, going 4 for 14 with a walk and a double. With Palm Beach in 2017, he was 3 for 21 with a walk and the Cards let him go. He founded a home with the independent San Rafael Pacifics and batted .269/.364/.398 while fielding .930 at short.

He played for the Dominican Republic in the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, splitting short with Juan Ciriaco. He was 1 for 13 with a walk and a run while handling 17 chances error-free.
