Biographical Information

Juan Dilone spent nine seasons as a minor league player then became a coach.

Dilone signed with the Oakland Athletics in 1990. He hit .165 that summer for the DSL Athletics. He batted .222/.366/.235 for the 1991 AZL Athletics but had 37 walks in 48 games. He also allowed one run in three innings on the mound. With the same club in '92, he hit .232/.383/.265, leading the Arizona League with 39 walks. In 1993, he played second, short, third, the outfield and pitcher (6 R in 2 2/3 IP) for the Southern Oregon A's, batting just .211/.311/.283. He was a regular for the 1994 West Michigan Whitecaps and put up a .230/.323/.403 line with 66 runs, 12 homers and 29 steals in 41 tries. He drew only 46 walks in 106 games and would not show the same walk rate as in 1991-1992 ever again, but his more aggressive approach paid off with better averages.

Juan was injured in 1995. He returned in '96 to bat .265/.343/.416 with 78 runs and 31 steals in 41 tries for the Modesto A's. He led A's farmhands with 138 strikeouts. It was a crowded outfield - in addition to Dilone (who also played 1B, 2B and 3B), Ben Grieve (.356) and Mike Neill (.339, 19 HR, 28 SB, 101 R) were California League All-Stars, Emil Brown hit .303 and David Newhan batted .301 with 25 homers and 96 runs for the top-scoring team in the Cal League.

In 1997, Dilone fell to .225/.317/.483 with 19 homers for Modesto. He signed with the San Francisco Giants for 1998 and split time between the San Jose Giants (.320/.383/.579) and Shreveport Captains (.207/.288/.423 in 36 G). Overall, he had 32 doubles, 22 home runs and 22 steals in 32 tries. He was unimpressive with the 1999 Captains, his only full season at AA, hitting .253/.354/.388 with 5 homers and 11 steals in 112 games.

Dilone ended his playing career in 2000 with the Torreon Cotton Dealers and Cancun Lobstermen, putting up a line of .270/.391/.425 in 57 Mexican League contests.

Dilone returned to the A's system as a hitting coach for the 2002 Visalia Oaks, 2003 Vancouver Canadians, and 2004 AZL Athletics. From 2005-2008, he worked in the A's Dominican operations as Coordinator of Dominican Instruction, except for 2006 when he managed the AZL A's. He returned to the AZL A's again as hitting coach in 2009-2015, then moved up to the Beloit Snappers in 2016-2019. He was scheduled to be a coach of the Midland RockHounds in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Dilone remained with the RockHounds in 2021 as an assistant hitting coach before taking over as hitting coach in 2022. He returned as an assistant hitting coach for Midland in 2023, then moved over to hitting coach in 2024.
