Biographical Information

Josue Montanez has pitched in the minors and for the Puerto Rican national team.

He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 25th round of the 2010 amateur draft out of high school. After a year of junior college, the Minnesota Twins selected him in the 15th round of the 2011 amateur draft. The scout was Hector Otero. He was 1-0 with a 5.25 ERA in eight outings that summer for the GCL Twins. Returning to them in 2012, he went 2-0 with a 0.36 ERA and .84 WHIP, fanning 30 in 25 innings.

Making his Puerto Rican League debut with the Leones de Ponce, he was 0-1 with a save and a 3.66 ERA in 2012-2013. He had a 7-5, 3.97 record with one save for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in '13. On April 7, he teamed with Tyler Duffey (who worked the first seven) and Tim Atherton (who closed it out) on a no-hitter against Beloit. He had a 0-1, 4.32 record for Ponce in 2013-2014.

Montanez split 2014 between Cedar Rapids (2-4, 6.67 in 24 G) and the Elizabethton Twins (2-2, 3.60 in 10 G). He went to the independent leagues in 2015, posting a 4-2, 1.83 record for the Joplin Blasters. He was 3-0 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 games for the Criollos de Caguas in the winter. He split 2016 between Joplin and the Laredo Lemurs, with a composite 1-6, 7.85 line.

He pitched in 2016-2017 for the Tiburones de Aguadilla (0-2, 3.07 in 12 G) then spent the next two winters with the Indios de Mayagüez (9.64 ERA in 5 G) and Cangrejeros de Santurce (7.36 ERA in 9 G) respectively. He pitched four hitless innings in the 2022 Caribbean Baseball Cup, saving the finale win over Cuba. He tied Yeudis Reyes for the tourney lead with four appearances.

Josue made one appearance in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. Relieving Freddie Cabrera with two outs in the 7th, a man on third and a 4-4 tie with Cuba, he walked Roel Santos and got Yadil Mujica to fly out. He was then relieved by Jan Figueroa.
