Biographical Information[edit]

José Godoy has played for the Venezuelan national team before making his major league debut.

Godoy signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011. He hit .239/.387/.282 with 32 walks in 46 games for the 2012 DSL Cardinals in his pro debut, throwing out 46% of attempted base-stealers. He batted .263/.368/.307 for the '13 GCL Cardinals and caught 44%. He made his Venezuelan Winter League with the Caribes de Anzoátegui.

In 2014, he played for the Johnson City Cardinals (.331/.423/.390 in 36 G) and the Palm Beach Cardinals (0 for 4). He gunned down 48%. The next year, he was with Palm Beach (1 for 6, BB) and the State College Spikes (.234/.333/.318 in 36 G), continuing to showcase defense (0 E, 42.9% CS). During 2016, he hit .293/.371/.341 for the Peoria Chiefs, throwing out 44%. He also was 1 for 1 with a run for the Springfield Cardinals. That winter, he was 2 for 9 with a walk for the Caribes.

In 2017, he was back at Palm Beach and produced at a .265/.317/.374 clip, fielding .995 and caught 40%. A year later, he appeared for Palm Beach (.289/.381/.374 in 68 G) and Springfield (.226/.273/.258 in 9 G). This time, opponents were nabbed at a 46.6% rate. He hit .364/.447/.455 for the 2018-2019 Caribes, backing up Tomas Telis.

Godoy played in 2019 for Springfield (.256/.348/.413 in 48 G) and the Memphis Redbirds (.316/.368/.468 in 27 G). He hit his first career grand slam June 23 off J.B. Bukauskas. [1] He then appeared for Venezuela in the 2019 Premier 12. He went 4 for 8 with a walk, getting hits off Taisuke Yamaoka of champion Japan and 3 against Puerto Rico (two off Luis Cintrón and one off Rámesis Rosa). Only Diego Rincones and Luis Castro had more hits for Venezuela in the event. [2]

He was a non-roster invitee to spring training with the Cardinals in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic cut short training. He did not appear in the minors that fall as the minor league season was also canceled due to COVID. He signed a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners prior to the 2021 season, where he was also a non-roster invitee to spring camp. He began the season with the AAA Tacoma Rainiers, and was called up when the M's sent down Luis Torrens, who had been struggling not only offensively, but defensively, as well. Godoy debuted in a blowout loss to the San Diego Padres on May 21st, replacing Tom Murphy in the game. He grounded out against Tim Hill and later drew a walk from Miguel Diaz. The Mariners touted that he was the 20,000th person to play Major League Baseball[3], although this came with a couple of caveats: Tyler Ivey and Jean Carlos Mejia also made their debut that day, but as a substitute in a game played on the West Coast, Godoy can be said to have been the latest of the three, and more importantly the number 20,000 did not include approximately 3,000 Negro Leagues players whose major league status had been formally recognized the previous off-season. He got his first big league start on May 23rd, another blowout loss against the Padres for the M's, and also his first hit - a 9th inning RBI single off Nabil Crismatt.
