Non-roster invitee
A non-roster invitee, often abbreviated NRI, is a player who is not on the 40-man roster who is invited to spring training with a MLB team. Young prospects and veteran free agent signees who have not been offered a major league contract often get such invitations. Catchers and pitchers are especially popular invitees to add depth at those spots.
