He was a baseball and football star in high school. [2] As a college freshman, he was 3-2 with two saves and a 3.68 ERA. He had a 9-4, 4.78 record as a sophomore, leading the Missouri Valley Conference in wins. He was 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the 2017 Cape Cod League. His junior year at Dallas Baptist, he fell to 1-1 with a save and a 5.85 ERA. Returning for a senior season, he rebounded to 8-4, 2.61 with 115 K in 100 IP. He tied for 5th in the MVC in wins and tied Brent Headrick for the most strikeouts.
The New York Mets took him in the 11th round of the 2019 amateur draft. Instead, though, he did not come to an agreement with them and signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed four hits and two runs in 1 1/3 IP for the 2019 AZL Dodgers Mota. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He moved up the rungs in 2021, but with the same poor results: 1-4, 9.55 in 18 games for the Tulsa Drillers and 0-1, 6.39 in 11 G for the Oklahoma City Dodgers.
Let go by LA, he signed with the indy leagues' Kansas City Monarchs, going 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA in 45 games. He struck out 83 in 74 1/3 IP. He tied Kevin McCarthy for 7th in the American Association in pitching appearances. He was on Germany's team for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He tied Nick Wittgren and Duke Von Schamann for the most games pitched, appearing in two of their three contests. In his debut, he relieved Kit Scheetz in the 5th with a 2-1 lead over South Africa. Jonathan Phillips singled and was bunted over by Victor Ngoepe. Kyle Botha reached on a fielder's choice and a passed ball by Bruce Maxwell tied it. Martinson retired Tyler Smith and struck out Dayle Feldtman. After he retired Benjamin Smith and Tyrone Milne, Wittgren took over. He closed out their 8-4 loss to the Czech national team, relieving Duke Von Schamann in the 8th. Filip Smola flew out, Jakub Hajtmar singled and Vojtěch Menšík hit into a double play. [3]
