Biographical Information

Johermyn Chavez made it to AA in 2011.

Chavez was signed by scout Rafael Moncada for the Toronto Blue Jays at age 16. He made his pro debut with the 2006 Pulaski Blue Jays, hitting .276/.371/.362. Baseball America ranked him as the 18th-best prospect in the Appalachian League. With the 2007 GCL Blue Jays, he improved to .301/.389/.494 with 7 steals in 9 tries. He was 4th in the Gulf Coast League in OBP (behind Andrew Lambo, Ezequiel Carrera and Alfredo Silverio) and 10th in average. In 2008, the Venezuelan struggled in his first full-season minor league, hitting only .211/.272/.323 for the Lansing Lugnuts. He struck out 128 times in 402 at-bats while drawing only 25 walks. He had 11 assists from left field.

In 2009, he repeated at Lansing and made good strides, improving his batting line to .283/.346/.474 with 21 home runs, 87 runs and 89 RBI. He still struck out 137 times while drawing only 40 walks, leading Toronto farmhands in strikeouts. He was second in the Midwest League in homers (5 behind Kyle Russell), tied Kyler Burke for third in RBI, 5th in hits (144, between Gustavo Nunez and Burke) and tied Brent Wyatt for fifth in runs. He was named team MVP. Baseball America rated him as having the best outfield arm in the MWL. That winter, he was 7 for 27 with 2 doubles and a homer for the Magallanes Navigators. In December, he was dealt to the Seattle Mariners with Brandon League for Brandon Morrow.

Johermyn had a superb 2010 with the High Desert Mavericks, hitting .315/.387/.577 with 30 doubles, 7 triples, 32 homers, 109 runs and 96 RBI. He was second in the California League in home runs (3 behind leader Paul Goldschmidt), runs (behind Kyle Seager), extra-base hits (69, trailing Goldschmidt) and total bases (308, 10 behind Goldschmidt), third in hits (168, trailing Seager and Grant Green) and slugging (after Goldschmidt and teammate Rich Poythress) and 5th in average (between Poythress and Goldschmidt) and RBI. He led Mariners minor leaguers in total bases/ He was named one of the league's All-Star outfielders, along with Marc Krauss and Francisco Peguero. Baseball America named him the league's #18 prospect, between Goldschmidt and Eric Surkamp, and as having the best outfield arm in the loop.

Chavez slumped big-time in 2011, hitting only .216/.312/.360 with 13 homers for the Jackson Generals. He had 16 outfield assists as a positive.

Chavez was hitting coach of the DSL Dodgers Shoemaker/Mega in 2021-2022 and ACL Dodgers in 2023.
