He won over 800 games, the most of any coach in WKU history at the time of his retirement. He was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1980 and 1981 and Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 1985 and 2002. He coached seven future major leaguers - Chris Turner, Don Durham, Ken Edenfield, Steve Stemle, Doug Piatt and Heath Haynes. After his retirement from the coaching ranks, he scouted for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He signed Matt Shoemaker as an undrafted free agent in 2008; three years later, Shoemaker was named Texas League Pitcher of the Year. He also signed Zach Borenstein. He is the father of Nate Murrie, who also has been a scout.
