Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Jim Horner retired as a player after the 2004 season. He spent most of that season and the three preceding it as a catcher for the Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League, usually as a back-up for Pat Borders. Horner's minor league career spanned from 1996 to 2004 all in the Seattle Mariners chain.
Horner joined the coaching ranks soon after his playing career ended. He was the hitting coach for the Everett AquaSox in 2005. In 2006, he became manager of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League. After two years at the helm there, he became skipper of the High Desert Mavericks.
At the end of July, 2010, Horner left the Mavericks to become an assistant coach at Texas Tech University, citing family as a determining factor. After coaching Tech through 2012, Horner returned to High Desert as manager in 2013. He then moved up to the Jackson Generals in 2014. Horner again left minor league ball at the end of June 2015 to return to Washington State University as an assistant coach where he stayed through 2019.
The Pittsburgh Pirates hired Horner for their West Virginia Black Bears hitting coach position in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the minor league season. Horner was bench coach of the Bradenton Marauders in 2021. He worked as a minor league assistant field coordinator for the Pirates in 2022 before returning to the diamond in 2023 as manager for the FCL Pirates.
