Biographical Information[edit]

Jesús Vargas has pitched for the Peruvian national team.

Vargas fled the turmoil in his native Venezuela to move to Peru and worked at a bakery, doing packing. [1] As his mother was from Peru, it was easy for him to obtain citizenship, enabling him to represent Peru on the international stage. [2] He was one of three Venezuelans natives on the Peruvian baseball team in the 2019 Pan American Games, alongside starting pitcher Jonathan Farías and fellow reliever José Herrera. [3] In his debut, he relieved Andrés Hamamoto in the 9th with a surprisingly close 4-1 deficit against Gold Medal-bound Puerto Rico. He did a fine job, retiring Jeffrey Domínguez on a grounder then fanning both Brahiam Maldonado and Edwin Gómez. In his second outing, he did not fare as well after replacing Farías in the 7th/8th place game with a 4-0 deficit, one out and the bases loaded in the 2nd inning against Argentina. Eduardo Zurbriggen greeted him with a two-run single, then Agustín Tissera hit a two-run double and Exequiel Talevi smacked a RBI double to make it 9-0. Lucas Nakandakare hit into an error by Jin Ishihara. Vargas recovered to retire Federico Gómez and Nicolás Solari. In the 3rd, Mauricio Costa singled. Vargas got both Mauro Schiavoni and Lucas Montalbetti then Zurbriggen singled again. Alex Takano relieved Vargas. [4]
