Jeff Ronk was a minor league infielder for five years.
Ronk was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round of the January 1979 draft out of junior college. At the University of California, he was named the All-American second baseman by Baseball America, the first year that publication gave out All-American honors. Frank Viola and Joe Carter were among the other honorees.
Ronk was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the 34th round of the 1981 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that year with the Walla Walla Padres (.370/.490/.479) and Salem Redbirds (.233/.343/.345). Had he qualified, he would have led the Northwest League in average.
Jeff would spend his other four seasons in AA. In 1982, he hit .326/.401/.461 for the Amarillo Gold Sox, scoring 87 runs. He was fifth in the Texas League in average, right between Carmelo Martinez and Tom Dunbar and a bit ahead of fellow All-American Joe Carter. That didn't earn him a promotion to AAA for some reason.
Ronk batted .272/.355/.382 for the 1983 Beaumont Golden Gators. Returning to Beaumont in '84, he hit .252/.336/.325 and was just 1-for-9 in steal attempts. Moving to the Chicago Cubs system in 1985, Jeff batted .234/~.272/.286 for the Pittsfield Cubs for his third straight season of decline, ending his career.
