Biographical Information[edit]
Jeff Rhein played in the minor leagues and the Taiwan Major League.
Rhein was drafted by the California Angels in the 11th round of the 1989 Amateur Draft, but he didn't sign, returning to Sac City College in 1990, then moving on to the University of Nebraska in 1991. Signing as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Astros, he hit .231/.313/.332 for their Auburn Astros affiliate in 1992, and stealing 23 bases to tie Tripp Keister and Todd Steverson for 9th in the New York-Penn League. He had a .208/.278/.302 batting line for the Quad Cities River Bandits in 1993. Rhein left the Astros chain in 1993, and he hit .246/.328/.474 in 36 games for the Duluth-Superior Dukes. Rhein recorded a .239/.276/.325 batting line for the Grays Harbor Gulls in 1995, with 8 outfield assists to 3 errors.
He collected 36 steals with a solid .341/.411/.467 batting line for the Clarksville Coyotes in 1996. He trailed only Dennis Hood and Jose Serra in steals in the Big South League, he tied Hood for 4th with 19 doubles, was 6th in average and he was 6th in runs. He stole 9 bases with a .284/.335/.446 batting line in Clarksville in 1997, and he got another 27 steals with a .267/.335/.426 batting line for the Chico Heat in that season. His six triples tied David Sanchez for the Western League lead and he tied Marcus McGowan for 4th in swipes. Rhein stayed with the Heat in 1998, and he crushed 11 homers with 18 steals and a .264/.319/.426 batting line.
The Michigan native hit .276/.377/.397 for the Zion Pioneerzz in 1999, then the Taipei Gida of Taiwan signed him. However, Rhein went 8-for-44 with them, and he was released. He returned to the USA, and he had a .288/.351/.516 batting line for the Yuma Bullfrogs in 2000. He led the WL with ten triples, tied Kalin Foulds for 3rd with 75 runs, tied Tim Belk for 5th in homers (16) and was 6th with 31 steals. He joined Buck McNabb and Justin Mashore as the league's All-Star outfielders. He hit .251/.290/.356 in Yuma in 2001, but his batting line fell to .143/.143/.286 in 11 games for the Sonoma County Crushers. The 2001 season was his last season as a professional player.
He was assistant coach at Shawnee State University from 2002-2005 and later coached Ann Arbor Skyline High School.
