Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jared Koenig was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 35th round of the 2014 amateur draft, out of Central Arizona College, but did was not offered a contract, and as a result headed to Old Dominion University. He was there in 2015 but pitched in only 9 games for a total of 15 1/3 innings and changed schools again at the end of the year, settling down closer to home at California State University, Monterey Bay. He was 3-1, 4.57 in 14 starts there in 2016 and went undrafted.

He began his pro career in the independent leagues, playing for four different teams in as many circuits in 2017, including the United Shore Professional Baseball League, the Pecos League, the American Association and the Pacific Association. The last of the four teams were the San Rafael Pacifics of the Pacific Association, and it's with them that he also played in 2018, going a sparkling 11-1, 3.54 in 16 starts. He moved to the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League in 2019, going 7-2, 2.24 in 20 games, then played in the Australian Baseball League the following winter, with the Auckland Tuatara, the only New Zealand-based team in the circuit. And then the Coronavirus pandemic hit, forcing him into inactivity for a full year - after he had finally managed to find a spot in Organized Baseball when he signed with the Oakland Athletics as a free agent on January 14, 2020.

He finally made his debut in the affiliated minors in 2021 with the Midland RockHounds of the Double-A Central, and went 7-5, 3.26 as a starter. In 2022, he began the season in AAA with the Las Vegas Aviators and was 4-2, 2.21 in 9 games when he was called up to make his major league debut with the Athletics on June 8th, facing the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. He gave up 4 runs on 5 hits in 4+ innings to be charged with a 13-2 loss, most of the damage coming after he had left the game.
