Biographical Information[edit]

Hong-jip Kim pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization and for the South Korean national team.

Kim pitched for South Korea in the 1990 Asian Games when they finished second (it was not a medal event) and 1990 Baseball World Cup (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K for the Bronze Medalists). He was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in the 1991 Intercontinental Cup. He was the first-round pick of the Taepyungyang Dolphins in the 1993 KBO draft. He was 7-8 with two saves and a 3.64 ERA as a rookie in the 1993 KBO, 10th in the league with 109 whiffs. In 1994, he had a 12-3, 3.20 record. He led the league in winning percentage, just missed the top 10 in ERA and was tied for 9th with 5 complete games. The Dolphins made the 1994 Korean Series but got swept. He faded to 6-7, 3.64 in 1995.

The Dolphins became the Hyundai Unicorns and Kim battled injuries in 1996 (6 BB, 6 H, 4 R in 7 IP). In 1997, he was 1-4 with a 6.14 ERA and 0-1, 5.48 in 1998. By 1999, he had become a LOOGY, working 59 games but 52 innings (2-2, 4 Sv, 5.02). He was 6th in the league in appearances. He was roughed up in 2000 (12 H, 6 BB, 9 R, 6 ER in 6 IP). In 2001, he was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 18 1/3 IP and 28 G and was traded with Young-pil Choi for Sang-yeol Lee of the Hanwha Eagles. He had a save and a 4.44 ERA for Hanwha in 2002. His last season, 2003, was a rocky one (10.52 ERA in 15 G).

For his career, he was 29-25 with a 4.08 ERA and 7 saves in 255 games in the KBO.
