Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Hector Nelo pitched in the minor and independent leagues from 2007 to 2017. He peaked at Double-A.

After being signed by scout Juan Alvarez, he began his career in the Texas Rangers system, but found limited success, posting ERAs of 6.55, 3.60, 5.16 and 6.41, respectively. Upon moving to the Washington Nationals chain in 2010, he saw significant improvement, posting a 2.40 ERA with 18 saves in 36 games for the Potomac Nationals. With the Harrisburg Senators in 2012, he had a 2.73 ERA with 16 saves in 47 games, striking out 63 in 52 2/3 innings. The Los Angeles Dodgers then took him in the Triple-A round of the 2012 Rule V Draft. In 2013, with the Chattanooga Lookouts, he was 5-2, 2.67 in 45 games. He slipped in 2014 and was released in June, to be picked up by the Cincinnati Reds about three weeks later. After a poor performance in the Reds system, he was released in mid-July. He briefly joined the indy ranks to finish out the year, then remained there through 2017. With the New Jersey Jackals in 2015, he had a 2.00 ERA and 21 saves, while striking out 45 in 36 innings. With the Rockland Boulders in 2016, he had a 2.45 ERA and 17 saves, while striking out 44 in 40 1/3 innings. He led the Can-Am Association in saves and was second in games finished, behind just Kaohi Downing. 2017 was a down year and he was out of indy ball. He briefly played in the Puerto Rico Winter League in 2019-20.

In the minor leagues, he was 12-20 with 39 saves and a 4.29 ERA in 256 games over eight seasons. In 369 innings, he allowed 359 hits and 214 walks (1.553 WHIP), while striking out 351 batters. In indy ball, he was 7-7 with 40 saves and a 2.87 ERA in 84 games. In 87 2/3 innings, he allowed 74 hits and 67 walks (1.608 WHIP), while striking out 103 batters. He was an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star in 2012 and a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star in 2013.

He served as co-pitching coach of the DSL Rangers Red in 2023 (alongside Ricardo Valencia) and the DSL Rojos (alongside David Rosario) in 2024.
