Biographical Information[edit]

Hao-Chun Chiu has pitched in the CPBL and for the Taiwanese national team.

Chiu played for Taiwan in the 2007 Asian Junior Championship. There were rumors the St. Louis Cardinals were close to signing him. [1] He played for Taiwan in the 2010 World University Championship. In the 2011 World Port Tournament, his three appearances tied Chen-Hua Lin for the team lead and he allowed one run in four innings (2 H, 5 K, 0 BB). [2] At the 2011 Baseball World Cup, his 13.50 ERA was Taiwan's highest, 1.23 worse than Kuan-Ju Chen. He pitched two games, giving up 3 runs in one inning against Panama (Taiwan dropped that game 14 to 8 against the hosts) and working the 4th inning of a combined mercy rule six-inning one-hitter versus Greece (in between Chun-Lin Kuo and Yu-Hsun Chen). [3]

The right-hander was picked by the Uni-President Lions in the 5th round of the 2014 CPBL Draft. He was hit hard in 2015 as a rookie (3-1, 7.63 ERA, 2.11 WHIP in 36 G). In 2016, he improved to 2-1, Sv, 4.97. In 2017, he was better yet (1-4, 3.48) in 61 games. He was 3rd in the league in games pitched, behind Keng-Hao Chang and Yao-Lin Wang. He had 17 holds, good for 3rd behind Wang and Po-Yu Lin. [4] He was 4-3 with 2 saves, 23 saves and a 3.35 ERA in 55 games for the Lions in the 2018 CPBL; he was 5th in appearances (between Kai-Wen Cheng and Tzu-Peng Huang) and led in holds (two ahead of Ching-Ming Wang). [5] Chiu pitched 2 2/3 innings with a run allowed in 3 games of the 2018 Taiwan Series, and the Lions were beaten by the Lamigo Monkeys in 6 games.

Chiu suffered from a right shoulder injury in June 2019, so he only pitched 24 games with a 5.12 ERA. He struggled in 2020 as his ERA was 17.28 in 9 games. Chiu bounced back in 2021, and he had a 3.52 ERA in 15 relief outings. He became that reliable reliever again in 2022, and he had a 1.22 ERA in 51 games while collecting 10 holds. He ranked 9th in holds (16 behind Yu-Hsun Chen) and 2nd in appearances (8 behind Bradin Hagens). He also attended the 2022 CPBL All-Star Game, but he allowed a run in an inning.

The Taipei native was selected into the 2023 CPBL All-Star Game, but he allowed a run in an inning again. He ended up notching 14 holds with a 2.64 ERA in 49 games, ranking 8th in holds (12 behind Chun-Wei Wu) and 10th in appearances (12 behind Wu). He pitched 1/3 of a shutout inning in the 2023 CPBL Playoff Series, and the Lions were eliminated by the Monkeys.

Chiu's repertoire included a fastball (peak 93.8 mph), a slider, forkball and curveball.
