Biographical Information[edit]
Guillermo Martinez became hitting coach of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019, after spending a number of years as a minor league coach for the Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs.
As a player, he was a middle infielder who played in the minors from 2006 to 2011. He was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 17th round of the 2003 amateur draft out of high school, and then by the Florida Marlins in the 15th round of the 2006 amateur draft, out of the University of South Alabama. He began his career that same year with the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League, hitting .193 in 38 games. He also spent the next two seasons in the Marlins system, appearing in the Florida State League with the Jupiter Hammerheads both years, and the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League] in 2007. He hit .260 in 48 games that year and .201 in 61 games in 2008. The rest of his playing career was in the independent leagues, with the Windy City ThunderBolts of the Frontier League in 2009 and 2010, the Lake County Fielders of the Northern League in 2010, and the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association in 2011. he hit a lot better in the indy leagues than in the affiliated minors, with averages of .304, .274 and .303 those three seasons, and 59 runs scored in 83 games n 2009.
As a a major league hitting coach, he received credit for his work with the Blue Jays' very talented young hitters, particularly Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., helping them to translate their obvious skills at the major league levels. Normally a quiet type, he uncharacteristically made it into the news on June 22, 2022 when he got into a pre-game argument with umpire Doug Eddings while exchanging line-up cards with the Chicago White Sox, apparently over the umpire's pitch calling in the previous night's game. He was ejected, and then suspended for five games for laying a hand on the umpire in the course of the altercation. He was let go following the 2024 season.
