Biographical Information[edit]
Graham Spraker has pitched in AAA three seasons (through 2022) and for the Great Britain national team.
He was 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA as a freshman at Quincy University, then improved to 5-2, 2.16. He was All-Great Lakes Valley Conference. [1] He fell to 6-3, 5.75 as a junior and returned for a senior year, going 7-5 with a 2.44 ERA. He again was All-Conference. [2] The Toronto Blue Jays took him in the 31st round of the 2017 amateur draft. The scout was Jeff Johnson. [3] He was 1-1 with 7 saves and a 1.62 ERA in a fine pro debut for the Bluefield Blue Jays. He was 4th in the Appalachian League in saves. He split 2018 between the Lansing Lugnuts (4-3, Sv, 3.26 in 18 G) and GCL Blue Jays (0-1, 3 R, 2 ER in 4 1/3 IP). In '19, he was 7-5 with a save and a 2.90 ERA for the Dunedin Blue Jays and made it to the AAA Buffalo Bisons for one game, allowing one run in 5 1/3 IP. He was 2-2 with a 5.68 ERA for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League. The 2020 minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With vaccines available, baseball returned to the minors in 2021. He was 2-1 with two saves and a 2.74 ERA in 30 games for the '21 New Hampshire Fisher Cats and again pitched briefly for Buffalo (0 R in 2 IP). He was excellent for the Mesa Solar Sox, with three saves and no runs in 11 1/3 IP, giving up only four hits and two walks while whiffing 17. He won AFL Reliever of the Year. [4] He was 1-4 with a 4.82 ERA for the 2022 Bisons, his first full year at AAA. He then pitched for Great Britain in the 2023 World Baseball Classic; his mother was born in Hong Kong and had a British passport. [5] He came up quite big for the Brits in his lone outing, though it started on a rough note. He relieved Tyler Viza in the 4th with the bases loaded, one out and a 1-0 deficit. He allowed a two-run single to Dayan Frías but recovered to fan Gustavo Campero and retire Harold Ramírez. After Britain tied it, he went 1-2-3 in the fifth against Gio Urshela, Jorge Alfaro and Reynaldo Rodríguez. After Britain took the lead, he had another 1-2-3 frame, this time against three MLB vets - Meibrys Viloria, Jordan Díaz and Oscar Mercado. By the time Chavez Fernander took over, Britain had a 5-3 lead. They would win 7-5 and he got the victory over Yapson Gómez. It was crucial for Britain as it would be their only win, giving them the tiebreaker over fellow 1-3 Colombia to avoid having to requalify, ensuring a spot in the next World Baseball Classic. [6] Having signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in the off-season, he completed a no-hitter for the Montgomery Biscuits on April 16, 2023, following Sean Hunley, Jeff Belge and Emmanuel Mejia. [7]
