Biographical Information[edit]
Gustavo Campero played for the Colombian national team before making his major league debut in 2024.
He made his pro debut in 2017, hitting .292/.444/.521 in 30 games for the GCL Yankees West and .375/.450/.688 in 6 games for the DSL Yankees, while throwing out 24% of those who tried to steal. He missed most of 2018, due to injury, going 1 for 5 for the GCL Yankees East. In 2019, he hit .293/.374/.414 and gunned down 40% for the Pulaski Yankees. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was then taken by the Los Angeles Angels in the AAA portion of the 2020 Rule V Draft. [1]
Playing for Colombia in the 2020 Americas Olympic Qualifier (held in 2021 due to delays from COVID-19), he backed up Carlos Martinez and Andrés Angulo at catcher. He played one game, at DH, against Cuba. He flew out his first at-bat against Bryan Chi then singled off him in the 5th before fanning later. [2] He hit .245/.316/.360 for the Inland Empire 66ers; while he only caught 30 games, it was the most of any backstop on the team. In the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup, he played mostly left field for Colombia and dazzled at .519/.517/.704 with 11 runs and 8 RBI in 8 games. He led the event in runs (one ahead of Romer Cuadrado) and hits (14), tied for 3rd in RBI, tied for 2nd with 19 total bases, led in average (.019 ahead of Alvaro Rubi), was 5th in slugging and OBP and was named the All-Star left fielder. Though Colombia won the Bronze Medal, he still took home the MVP. [3]
After being drafted by the Angels, Gustavo spent the 2021 season with the Inland Empire 66ers of the Low-A West, hitting .245 in 41 games. He was still a full-time catcher at the time, but in 2022, he was moved to the outfield full-time, but only played 6 games for the Rocket City Trash Pandas. He had a much more complete season in winter ball, with the Caimanes de Barranquilla in the Colombian League, hitting .333 in 40 games and playing for them in the 2023 Caribbean Series. He was 1-for-5 for Colombia in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. [4] He then spent most of 2023 with the Tri-City Dust Devils of the Northwest League, where he hit .337 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs in 64 games, slugging .644. That got him back into being considered a prospect, and in 2024, he made it all the way to the majors after starting off in Rocket City, where he appeared in 93 games, and passing through the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League for 14 games. Between the two levels, he hit .279/.392/.472. He made his big league debut on September 15th, pinch-hitting for Jack López in the 8th inning of a game against the Houston Astros and then staying in the game in left field. He grounded out in his first big league at-bat.
