Outfielder Giorvis Duvergel has been a good hitter in Cuba in the early part of the 21st Century and has been sporadically on the Cuban national team. He is one of the brighter stars on a weak Guantánamo team.
Duvergel hit .352/.423/.459 in the 2000-2001 Serie Nacional and stole 27 bases in 36 tries. He debuted with the national team in the 2001 Baseball World Cup; the 22-year-old was 2 for 6 with 3 runs and a triple while backing up Yasser Gomez in center field. He hit .324/.385/.383 in the 2001 World Port Tournament with 3 steals in five tries. In 2001-2002, he batted .352/.416/.514 with just 8 steals in 17 tries. In the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, he was 1 for 7 with two walks while backing up Gomez once again.
Duvergel hit .308/.406/.430 for Guantánamo in 2002-2003. He had an off-season in 2003-2004, only batting .274/.346/.393. In 2004-2005, he bounced back with a batting line of .353/.415/.471 and finished 5th in the Serie Nacional in average.
Giorvis hit .329/.401/.523 in 2005-2006 and showed improved power, with 15 home runs after averaging 5.3 the prior three campaigns. During the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, Duvergel was 3 for 13 with a triple and was caught stealing twice. He returned to the national team for the 2006 COPABE Olympic Qualifiers, hitting .429/.529/.643 as Cuba locked up a spot in the 2008 Olympics. He tied Michel Enriquez for sixth in the event in batting average.
In the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, Duvergel had another fine tournament, hitting .387/.424/.581 and made the tournament All-Star team alongside outfield teammates Frederich Cepeda and Yoandry Urgellés. He had a big hit in the Gold Medal game. The #9 hitter homered off of Dave Draijer in the 10th inning to give Cuba a 3-2 lead over the Dutch national team, but the Netherlands tied it. Cuba came back to win it in the 11th.
Duvergel hit .356/.437/.487 in the 2006-2007 Serie Nacional. He was fifth in the league average for the second time in three seasons; both times, he hit exactly .356. In the 2007 Pan American Games, Duvergel hit .429/~.500/.524 with 6 runs in five games. He trailed Jordan Danks by one for the tournament lead in runs scored as he helped Cuba win Gold. Duvergel caught the final out of the competition; with a 3-1 lead in the 9th inning of the Gold Medal game and one aboard, he snagged a fly from Justin Smoak to end the contest.
In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, Duvergel battled injuries and was 3 for 10 while backing up Alfredo Despaigne in center field. Cuba only won Silver, their worst Baseball World Cup showing since the 1960s. In the 2007-2008 Serie Nacional, the outfielder hit .338/.450/.554 while being limited to 63 games by health problems.
Duvergel hit only .211/.316/.302 as Cuba's leadoff man in the 2008 Olympics - his highlight in Beijing was a grand slam in the rout against host China. In the opening round, Duvergel's 6 RBI tied Nate Schierholtz, Atsunori Inaba, Matthew Brown, Alexei Bell and Takahiro Arai for 4th, trailing Alfredo Despaigne, Dae-ho Lee and Michel Enriquez. He also tied Masahiro Araki, Hyun-soo Kim, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Eduardo Paret and Jong-wook Lee and Lingfeng Sun for the most steals (2).
Duvergel hit .386/.516/.621 in 2008-2009. He ranked among the league leaders in runs (79, tied for 6th), hits (123, tied with Alfredo Despaigne for 8th), total bases (198, 6th), steals (13, tied for 6th), walks (82, 3rd behind Michel Enríquez and Frederich Cepeda), slugging (9th) and average (4th behind Enríquez, Yulieski Gourriel and Yorelvis Charles). His 16 homers just missed the top 10. He was named to the All-Star outfield alongside Yohenis Céspedes and Despaigne.
He hit .258/.297/.358 with three sacrifice flies in the 2009 World Port Tournament and stole one base in 3 tries.
Duvergel hit .323/.423/.494 in the 2009-2010 Serie Nacional and fielded .985.
