Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Gerardo "Gera" Alvarez was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 16th round of the 2002 Amateur Draft and he played in their minor league system from 2002-2007. He played most of his games at second base, shortstop, and third base. In his final season with the Orioles he appeared in five games with the AAA Norfolk Tides. Overall, Alvarez hit .236/.320/.346 in his six minor league seasons. Alvarez finished his playing career in 2008 with the Somerset Patriots in the independent Atlantic League.
According to his LinkedIn page, Alvarez began his coaching career as the hitting coach for the Vista (CA) High School Panthers in 2007/2008.[1] He moved into coaching on a full-time basis in 2009 as the hitting coach for the Midwest Sliders. Alvarez stayed in the Frontier League in 2010 as manager of the Oakland County Cruisers.
The Pittsburgh Pirates hired Alvarez in 2011 and he has worked in their player development system ever since. He was the bench coach for the West Virginia Power in 2011. The Pirates promoted him to a managerial position for the next three seasons with the DSL Pirates 1 in 2012-2013 and DSL Pirates in 2014. In the latter year Alvarez also served as the Dominican Summer League Academy Coordinator, a role he repeated in 2015-2016.
Alvarez moved stateside in 2017 as manager of the Bradenton Marauders who he also managed in 2018. In 2019 he managed the GCL Pirates. Alvarez was scheduled to coach the Altoona Curve in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. In 2021 he managed the FCL Pirates Gold squad. Gera served as the Latin American Field Coordinator from 2022-2024.
Alvarez also has extensive coaching and managing experience in the Mexican Pacific League during the winter months.
