Biographical Information[edit]
Gene Stephenson has been head baseball coach at Wichita State University since 1977. During his tenure, the team has reached the College World Series seven times, winning the title in 1989. He was also named Baseball America Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1993. After 36 years, WSU fired Stephenson in 2013 [1]. Stephenson was 1,837-673-3 with the Shockers.
Going to college on a football scholarship, Gene took up baseball as a sophomore, once leading the Big Eight Conference in average. After three years in the military (one in Vietnam) and five years as an assistant at University of Oklahoma, he became head coach at WSU and built up the program into a powerhouse. One of his first major recruits was his brother, Phil Stephenson.
