Gary Maree pitched for the South African national team in the 1995 Intercontinental Cup. He was pounded for 18 runs (10 earned) in 5 innings with 13 hits (4 homers) in 28 at-bats plus six walks and two hit batsmen. He lost his lone decision. He did not have South Africa's worst ERA, finishing next-to-last on a staff with a cumulative 9.54 figure.

He made one appearance 11 years later in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, now one of South Africa's older performers. He pitched against Team Canada, relieving Jared Elario in the 9th inning with two men on and a 10-8 deficit. He threw a wild pitch, then walked Stubby Clapp. Jason Bay hit into a force, then Justin Morneau fouled out.

Another wild pitch scored runner Pete Orr then Sébastien Boucher doubled home Jason Bay on a full count for insurance. Corey Koskie flew out to end Maree's day.
