Gabriel Alvarez pitched in the minor leagues and for the Mexico national team.
Alvarez began his professional career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002, and he had a 5.49 ERA with 4 saves for the GCL Dodgers and a 11.81 ERA in 3 games for the Vero Beach Dodgers in his first season. He tied for 8th in the Gulf Coast League in saves. He went 3-2 with a save and a 4.25 ERA for the Ogden Raptors in 2003, and he also allowed 8 runs in 8 2/3 innings for the South Georgia Waves, going 0-1 with two saves. He represented Mexico in the 2003 Baseball World Cup, going 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA. Relieving Alejandro Chavez in the 8th with a 6-3 deficit against Japan and blanked them for two innings as his team tied it but allowed two in the 10th to lose to Takashi Shiozaki. Alvarez collected 3 saves with a 4.30 ERA in 16 games for the Raptors in 2004, and he left the Dodgers system.
The Tijuana native had a 9.58 ERA in 10 games for the Acereros de Monclova in 2005, and he surrendered 6 runs in 6 innings for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico. He struggled again in 2006 as he allowed 6 runs in 3 2/3 innings for the Diablos, and his ERA was 6.75 in 18 appearances for the Olmecas de Tabasco. Alvarez went 2-3 with a 6.22 ERA for the Guerreros de Oaxaca in 2007, and he pitched for Mexico again in the 2007 Baseball World Cup. He had a 5.14 ERA and saved Humberto Cardenas's win over South Africa.
Alvarez pitched 16 games with a 10.45 ERA for the Guerreros in 2008, and his ERA was 7.36 in 7 games in 2009. He also recorded a 3.48 ERA in 19 games for the Vaqueros Laguna in 2009. His ERA rose to 5.97 in 30 appearances in Laguna in 2010, and he allowed 12 runs in 15 innings for the Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo. He missed the entire 2011 season, then he recorded a 6.94 ERA in 21 appearances for the Delfines de Ciudad del Carmen. Alvarez only pitched 3 innings with 10 runs allowed in 2013, and his professional career ended.
Overall, Alvarez was 14-19 with a 6.55 ERA, notched 10 saves and struck out 279 in 228 games in 11 seasons as a professional player.
