The South Georgia Waves were a minor-league professional team in the South Atlantic League. They moved from Wilmington, North Carolina following the 2001 season. The Waves replaced the Columbus RedStixx as the team to play in south Georgia. Originally, the team played the 2002 season in Albany, Georgia, but disputes between the owner and the city of Albany forced the Waves to move to Columbus, GA nine days before the beginning of the season. They played in Golden Park in 2003, giving the stadium another home to an MiLB team. Following the '03 campaign, the Waves were to be sold and moved to Evansville, IN with Cal Ripken and Don Mattingly as part of the new ownership group. The deal fall apart and the team became defunct and the Columbus Catfish became the third different team in three years to play in Columbus, GA.
