In 1988 the Nankai Hawks were sold to the department store corporation Daiei, which controlled the team until 2005, when they were again bought by another business and became the Softbank Hawks. After 1988, the team moved to Fukuoka from Osaka and were officially the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks (the FDH letters were part of the team uniforms).
They were fairly successful in their Daiei incarnation, winning two Japan Series in 16 years.
In 2003, the team had the first quartet of players to drive in 100 runs in a season: Johjima, Matsunaka, Iguchi and Pedro Valdes.
