Fresno Suns

From BR Bullpen

After 30 years of working with the San Francisco Giants as the Fresno Giants, the city of Fresno, CA lost its major league sponsor in 1988 over stadium issues. The team continued as an independently operated club in the California League, although they received at least 7 players from the Giants and 4 from the Baltimore Orioles. The team fared very poorly - they drew the fewest fans (34,734, less than half the league average) and only the other independent club (the Reno Silver Sox) had a worse record than Fresno's 53-89. The Fresno Suns placed no one on the league All-Star team. Ex-major leaguers Terry Whitfield, Julio Cruz, Mike Richardt, Ralph Citarella, Andy Rincon and Dwayne Murphy were with the team; Whitfield hit .337/~.380/.449 but the team was loaded with sub-.200 hitters or guys with ERAs over 5. The Suns were abolished after the '88 campaign and it would be ten years before Fresno got another minor league team in the form of the Fresno Grizzlies.
