Biographical Information[edit]

Fredy Deza was a minor league pitcher for 10 years, spending parts of two years in AAA.

Deza was signed by Baltimore Orioles scout Carlos Bernhardt in September 1999 and would spend his whole career in the O's chain. He went 7-2 with a 1.73 ERA, .201 opponent average, 71 strikeouts and 14 walks in 78 innings for the 2000 DSL Orioles 1. He was 9th in the Dominican Summer League in ERA. In 2001, he was in the US, pitching for the GCL Orioles (1-4, 3.14) and Delmarva Shorebirds (0-2, 3.00). He began 2002 0-5 with a 4.38 ERA for Delmarva before a strained right elbow cut his season short. In 2003, he was with the Aberdeen IronBirds (3-5, 3.25) and the Frederick Keys (5 R in 1 1/3 IP).

Fredy spent most of 2004 with Delmarva (8-11, 3.31, 21 BB in 119 2/3 IP), also appearing for Frederick (1-3, 5.61). He led the Orioles farm system in losses but also tied for third in wins behind Hayden Penn and Zach Dixon. He had a rough 2005 for Frederick (5-8, 6.12) and pitched for them again in 2006, this time solely in relief (3-4, 4.75 in 43 G). After the season, he had a 2.70 ERA in four games for the Azucareros del Este of the Dominican Winter League. In the summer of '07, Deza made it to AA with the Bowie Baysox and posted a 7-8, 4.43 record. He was 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA in winter ball for the Azucareros; his 20 appearances led the team and were 7th in the league.

Fredy split the summer of 2008 between Aberdeen (2 UER in 8 IP, 1-0, 4 Sv), Frederick (0-2, 4 Sv, 4.74 in 12 G) and the Norfolk Tides (1-1, 2.25 in 6 G, 16 K in 8 IP). With Frederick, he teamed with Brandon Erbe and Ryan Ouellette on a no-hitter, tossing 2 2/3 perfect innings for the save. In had a 7.62 ERA and 2.00 WHIP for the 2008-2009 Azucareros. In his last US season, he pitched 31 games for Bowie (6-7, 3.79) and 5 for Norfolk (2-1, 5.14). He had a 4.15 ERA in limited work for the 2009-2010 Toros del Este.

In 10 minor league seasons, Deza had gone 45-63 with 9 saves and a 4.03 ERA.
