Biographical Information[edit]

Francisco Hernández played in the minors and for the Dominican national team.

He began his career with the 2003 DSL White Sox, batting .296 and slugging .444. [1] In 2004, he hit .326/.372/.492 for the Bristol White Sox and was 4 for 12 with a double for the Kannapolis Intimidators. He tied for 10th in the Appalachian League in doubles (13), was second in average (.006 behind Juan Lucena and led catchers in putouts (347), assists (55), errors (13) and double plays (4). [2] He lost out the All-Star catcher spot to Cole Armstrong. [3] Baseball America named him the #2 prospect in the league, behind Mitch Einertson and ahead of players like Gio Gonzalez (#5) and Trevor Plouffe (#6). [4]

The next year, he was with Kannapolis (.222/.292/.314 in 44 G) and Great Falls White Sox (.349/.405/.524 in 58 G). He was third in the Pioneer League in average (behind Corey Wimberly and Kenny Holmberg), fifth in OBP (between Will Crouch and Jason Mooneyham), third in slugging (after Holmberg and Chris Cook) and second in OPS (trailing Holmberg). He was named the All-Star DH. [5] Baseball America rated him as the fifth-best prospect in the loop, between Ángel Salomé and Stephen Marek. [6]

Hernández fell to .247/.306/.361 in 2006, all of it with Kannapolis. He fielded .991 and threw out 33% of those who tried to steal. His 95 assists led South Atlantic League backstops. [7] Returning to the same team in '07, he batted .277/.363/.413. He played that winter for the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League, hitting .293/.326/.293 in 14 games, backing up Luke Carlin.

He posted a .245/.338/.382 line for the 2008 Winston-Salem Warthogs, fielded .993 and threw out 43%. He led Carolina League catchers in fielding percentage. [8] He was the Estrellas' main catcher in 2008-2009, edging out Robinzon Díaz. He hit .266/.309/.297 and threw out 41%. He was 4 for 10 with a walk for the team in 2009-2010 (backing up Díaz and Tony Cruz), his White Sox career over. He was 2 for 17 with a walk and RBI for the 2010-2011 Estrellas.

Playing for the indy Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, he hit .194/.212/.226 in eight games in 2011. He also was with the Dominican team for the 2011 Pan American Games, going 0 for 2 and handling seven chances error-free as the third-stringer behind Alex Castillo and Danilo Sánchez. [9] He batted .258/.291/.397 for the 2012 Lancaster Barnstormers, backing up Emerson Frostad.

Wrapping up his Dominican League career, he was 4 for 12 with a run and two RBI for the 2012-2013 Tigres del Licey. Backing up Danny Taveras in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he went 3 for 6 for the Dominicans, handling 16 chances error-free and throwing out the only runner who tried to steal. The Dominicans won the Bronze Medal. [10]
