The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks began play in the Northern League in 1996 as an expansion team along with the now-defunct Madison Black Wolf, and remained in that league until its disbanding after the 2010 season. They then moved to the American Association, with three other Northern League teams in 2011. Since their inception, Doug Simunic was the club's manager, winning five league championships in the Northern League until he was replaced by pitching coach Michael Schlact towards the end of the 2017 season.
