He was 2-2 with a 6.39 ERA as a freshman in college and tied for 9th in the Big 12 Conference with 28 games pitched. As a sophomore in 2010, he improved to 5-5, 3.90 and again tied for 9th in the conference in pitching appearances (27). His junior year, he was 5-5 with a 1.62 ERA and whiffed 55 in 30 IP. He tied for 7th in the Big 12 in games pitched. He finished his career second in KSU history with 85 games pitched.

He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 4th round of the 2011 amateur draft and earned a $232,500 signing bonus. The scout was Joe Robinson. He posted a 1.16 ERA in his first professional season as he spent time with the Yakima Bears (2 Sv, 0.75 in 11 G), Visalia Rawhide (0-1, 4 Sv, 1.59 in 15 G) and Mobile Bay Bears (0 R in 2 IP). His RA was a fair bit higher as 6 of the 10 runs off him were unearned. Opponents hit .217 off him. In 2012, he was 6-3 with 16 saves and a 3.51 ERA for the Bay Bears. He tied Justin Freeman and Kirby Yates for 6th in the Southern League in saves. Among Diamondback farmhands, he was second in saves, trailing only Jonathan Albaladejo. He was 0-1 with two saves and a 2.19 ERA for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League.

With the 2013 Reno Aces, Evan was 3-6 with 3 saves and a 4.34 ERA, his WHIP up to 1.81 though he did fan 59 in 58 IP. He tied Fernando Cabrera, Heath Hembree and Miles Mikolas for 5th in the 2013 PCL in games pitched (54) while he tied Blake Cooper and Bryan Woodall for 4th in the Arizona farm system in that department. He began 2014 better with Reno (0-1, Sv, 0.54 in 14 G, 19 K in 16 2/3 IP). He was called up when J.J. Putz went on the DL.

In his major league debut on May 6, 2014, he got the win. He entered in a double switch in the bottom of the 6th, with a 5-4 deficit against the Milwaukee Brewers, two on and two out, replacing Josh Collmenter on the hill and Martin Prado in the lineup. He got Carlos Gómez on a grounder to escape the jam. He struck out Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Lucroy to open the 7th then got Aramis Ramirez on a comebacker. Arizona scored three runs off Brandon Kintzler in the 8th and Cody Ross pinch-hit for Marshall. Brad Ziegler and Addison Reed made the lead hold up to give Marshall the victory. he had a very solid first season, going 4-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 57 games while logging 49 1/3 innings and 54 strikeouts. However, he started the 2015 season slowly and was 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA after 13 games when he was sent down to Reno in mid-May.

He was pitching for Reno in El Paso, TX when he suffered a potentially fatal injury on August 4th: he was hit in the side of the head by a vicious line drive off the bat of Jason Hagerty. He claims he never saw the ball, but just felt the blow. The ball deflected directly to first base, where the first baseman picked it up and retired the batter, but Evan had to leave the game and was taken to hospital when he began to feel dizzy. He had a fractured skull and a cerebral hemorrhage and was rushed into surgery at the University of Texas-El Paso Hospital. The injury was life-threatening, but the quickness of the medical intervention prevented extensive damage. Within three weeks, he was in outpatient therapy, although the road to a full recovery was going to be long and his future in baseball was still uncertain. But he defied the odds by not only making it back to the mound by the start of spring training in 2016, but by doing so with the major league team and in competition to make the opening day pitching staff. He started the year in the minors, but was one of the first pitchers to be called up when the D-Backs needed some help at the big league level, making his first appearance of the year on April 17th in relief of Patrick Corbin in a 7-3 win over the San Diego Padres; he pitched two perfect inning that day.
