Biographical Information[edit]
Ernie White pitched seven seasons in the big leagues. In addition to going 17-7 for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1941, he appeared in the 1942 World Series (winning Game 3) and the 1943 World Series. In his last major league season, in 1948 he posted an ERA of 1.96 for the Boston Braves, the team of Spahn and Sain.
White was born in South Carolina, as was also the case with his teammate on the 1948 Braves, Bill Voiselle. Ernie played high school and semi-pro ball before going into the minors. He had good winning records in the minors, going 15-6, 15-7 and 13-4 in the years 1938-1940.
He had arm problems while in the majors in 1942-1943.
White entered the Army in January 1944 and was discharged in January 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a player-coach with the Boston Braves in 1947 and 1948 and a member of the New York Mets coaching staff in 1963. He also managed 15 years in the minors.
