Biographical Information[edit]

Eric Segura played in the Spanish Baseball League and for the Spanish national team.

In the 2007 European Junior Championship, he was 0 for 1 with a walk as a backup catcher. [1] In the 2008 Division de Honor, he hit .412/.389/.588 with 8 RBI in 17 AB in limited action for CB Viladecans. [2] The next summer, he batted .161/.278/.161. [3] He was 1-for-16 with a walk, two times plunked, a triple, a run and two RBI as Spain's primary backstop in the 2009 European Junior Championship, leading the event with three passed balls. [4]

Segura became the starting catcher for Viladecans in 2010, at age 18. He hit .244/.305/.386 with 24 runs in 36 games, going 9-for-12 in steals, and fielding .993. He tied for second in the league with three triples (trailing Oscar Angulo by two). [5] In '11, he slipped to .214/.288/.295. [6] Moving to CB Barcelona, he improved to .337/.448/.505 in 2012 and threw out 43.7% of those who tried to steal, helping them win the pennant. He was third in the league in runners caught stealing. He was 1-for-12 in the 2013 European Cup. [8] In the Division de Honor that summer, he produced at a .301/.337/.361 clip and handled 197 chances error-free, the most in the league (next with a 1.000 fielding percentage was someone with 71 chances). [9] In 2014, he batted .261/.354/.351 for Barcelona. [10] The next year, he hit .237/.371/.441 with 5 homers in 93 AB. He tied Blake Ochoa for the home run title, tied for 6th in RBI (19), tied for 2nd in HBP (7) and was third in runners caught stealing. [11]

During 2016, he hit .248/.341/.390 with 23 RBI in 28 games, fielding .996. He was 6th with 23 RBI (between Angulo and Yancarlo Franco). [12] He played for Spain in the 2016 European Championship, backing up Ochoa behind the dish. He got into one game for the Silver Medal winners, versus Greece. He struck out twice against Dimitri Kourtis, hit a sac fly off Jason Zachos to score Franco and flew out facing Joey Vreonis. [13]

The Viladecans native produced at a .299/.410/.460 rate in 2017. [14] Moving to the Astros Valencia in 2018, he batted .405/.507/.752 with 38 runs, 11 doubles, 9 homers and 31 RBI in 31 games. In his career year, he was 6th in slugging (between Ochoa and Roibert Decena), tied Leopoldo Correa for 9th in runs, tied Onelio Fondín for 8th in hits (49), tied for 6th in doubles, was 6th in homers, ranked 4th in total bases (96, only 5 behind co-leaders Correa and Richard Montiel), led in HBP (10), led in total chances (264, 6 ahead of Correa) and led in putouts (246). [15] In the 2018 Federations Cup, he drove in five in the title game to beat the Sölvesborg Firehawks. For the Cup, he was at .316/.417/.737 with two homers, six runs and seven RBI in five games, handling 31 chances with no miscues. He led in fielding (Emmanuel Febles was next with 22 TC and no errors), was 8th in slugging, tied for 6th in RBI, tied for the homer lead, tied for 6th in total bases and was 5th in putouts (between Héctor Acuña and Axel Poesmans). [16] He backed up Segura in the 2018 Super6, getting into one game. Against the Czech national team, he replaced Ochoa during a 12-7 victory, striking out against Lukáš Hlouch. [17]

In '19, he returned to Viladecans and hit .271/.388/.388. He tied for second with eight hit-by-pitches. [18] He improved to .344/.488/.484 in 2020, scoring 19 times in 18 games. He handled 106 chances without an error. He was among the leaders in walks (19, 3rd, after Ochoa and Javier Monzón), steals (tied for 4th with 9), putouts (96, 8th) and fielding (3rd). [19] The Division de Honor was renamed the Spanish Baseball League in 2021. Segura slumped to .208/.400/.292. [20]

Retiring as a player, he became the technical director of Catalonia's baseball and softball federation. [21]
