Biographical Information

Javier Monzón has played in Spain and the USA and has played for the Spanish national team.

He moved from Cuba to Spain when he was 17. He joined CB Viladecans in Spain's Division de Honor for 2011 and hit .361/.409/.525 in 21 games, fielding .847 with 13 errors. He had a better average than any of the team's qualifiers.

He fell to .254/.333/.313 in 2012 but fielded .920. In '13, he produced at a .231/.321/.402 clip, leading the league with 7 triples and tying for 4th with 10 steals (in 12 tries) while fielding .919.

Monzón moved to the Dominican Republic in 2014 to draw the interest of MLB scouts. The Toronto Blue Jays signed him. He played in their system in 2016, as the utility man hit .232/.353/.464 in 22 games for the GCL Blue Jays and .261/.350/.507 in 21 games for the Bluefield Blue Jays, with 30 runs and 6 triples in 43 games overall. Despite his limited time, he tied for 5th in the Jays chain in three-baggers. The team let him go in 2017 without playing again, having posted a .486 slugging in his summer in the US.

Javier returned to Viladecans in 2018 after not playing in Spain in four years, batting .380/.551/.826 with 7 triples, 7 homers, 44 runs, 26 RBI and 17 steals (caught only once) in 31 games in a splendid show. He fielded .916. He led the Division de Honor in slugging (.033 ahead of Kreisber Auciello), was 5th in OBP, tied Blake Ochoa for 5th in runs, led in triples (two ahead of Ramon Coronel), was 8th in home runs, was second in walks (35, 4 behind Ochoa), tied Eduardo Moredo for second in swipes (two behind Edgar Rondon) and tied Michel Rodríguez for 2nd in sacrifice flies.

The Havana native put up similar numbers in 2019 - .374/.504/.798, 39 R in 28 G, .911 FLD%. He fell to 6th in slugging (between Edison Valerio and Yancarlo Franco), was 10th in OBP, was 4th in runs, tied for 6th in doubles (11), led in triples (5), was 9th in homers, ranked 7th with 79 total bases, was 7th with 25 walks (between Ochoa and Valerio) and was 3rd in steals.

He was on the Spanish national team in the 2019 European Championship, driving in five against Austria. He was 3 for 7 with two doubles in the event, with all his RBI coming versus Austria, including a 3-run homer off Fabian Hirnschal. He did not play in the Bronze Medal Game, which Spain won; the team mostly used Franco and Lesther Galván as their corner outfielders.

In the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier, he was 0 for 4 but scored a run in their 4-3 upset of Italy. He drew a Murilo Gouvea walk, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Leomartires Rodriguez single. He was involved in a brawl that game, though, and was suspended for 12 games.
