Biographical Information[edit]
Edgar Olmos made the majors in 2013.
Olmos was taken by the Florida Marlins in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft, the 83th overall pick, between Roger Kieschnick and Zach Stewart. He signed for a $478,000 bonus. The scout was Tim McDonnell. He pitched one game for the 2008 GCL Marlins (5 K, 2 H, 0 R in 1 2/3 IP). He had shoulder surgery in the off-season, and saw limited action for the GCL Marlins (1 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 R in 5 IP) and Jamestown Jammers (1 R in 4 IP). The lefty was healthy again in 2010 and was with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, going 3-9 with a 4.37 ERA. He walked 59 in 117 1/3 IP and hit 16 batters, finishing 7th in the South Atlantic League in walks and tied for third in hit batsmen.
Olmos pitched horrendously for the 2011 Jupiter Hammerheads, going 4-17 with a 6.63 ERA and 1.94 WHIP. He led the Florida State League in losses (two more than Chad James), starts (28), runs allowed (110, 14 more than anyone else), earned runs surrendered (94) and walks (81, 10 more than runner-up Rob Rasmussen), was third in hits allowed (167) and tied for second for wild pitches (16). He led all of minor league baseball in defeats. Edgar was far better in 2012, which he split between Jupiter (1-5, 4.33, 48 BB, 10 WP in 89 1/3 IP) and the Jacksonville Suns (0-1, 0.54, 16 BB in 16 2/3 IP). He was still third in the Marlins chain in walks. He opened 2013 very well as a reliever for the Suns (4-2, Sv, 1.27 in 19 G) and got called up when Wade LeBlanc was sent down.
In his MLB debut, the 23-year-old replaced Ryan Webb on the mound and Casey Kotchman in the batting order in a double switch. He entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the 6th, with his club trailing by a 7-2 margin. He got Ryan Howard on a grounder to end that inning. In the 7th, the Californian allowed a single to Domonic Brown but Delmon Young hit into a double play and Erik Kratz flew out. Dan Jennings relieved him in the 8th.
Off the diamond, Olmos has been a triathlete, finishing 38th in the 2012 Beach Blast triathlon.
