Biographical Information[edit]
Edgar Durán played in AAA in two seasons but never made the majors. He later was on the Venezuelan national team.
He was signed by Philadelphia Phillies scouts Sal Agostinelli and Jesús Méndez in December 2007. [1] He made his pro debut with the 2008 VSL Phillies, hitting .228/.266/.258 and fielding .931 at short. That winter, he was 3 for 14 for the Bravos de Margarita. In 2009, he came stateside and batted .221/.274/.279 for the GCL Phillies, splitting short with Jonathan Villar.
With the 2010 Williamsport Crosscutters, he hit .235/.269/.299 and fielded .941 at short. He turned 36 double plays to lead New York-Penn League shortstops. [2] Moving up to a full-season league, he produced at a .234/.280/.299 clip for the 2011 Lakewood BlueClaws with a career-high 15 steals (in 22 tries). He paced the South Atlantic League with 13 sacrifice hits.
Durán clubbed a career-high seven homers with the 2012 Clearwater Threshers and his offense was improving (.253/.310/.357) while his .964 fielding percentage also marked progress. Returning to the Venezuelan League for the first time in four years, he was now Margarita's starting shortstop ahead of Jonathan Herrera. He hit .228/.295/.317. In 2013, he batted .225/.277/.311 for the Reading Fightin Phils. He followed with a .238/.333/.381 winter, backing up Alberto González.
In 2014, he was with Reading (.224/.277/.302 in 105 G) and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (.171/.261/.195 in 14 G). His 70 double plays led Eastern League shortstops. [3] He eked out a .163/.242/.207 for the '15 IronPigs, backing up Chase d'Arnaud, to end his minor league career. That winter, he hit .256/.294/.363 for the Bravos.
He split 2016-2017 between the Bravos (.215/.324/.258 in 28 G) and the Tigres de Aragua (.232/.339/.286 in 19 G). He was 4-for-15 with two walks for the 2017-2018 Tigres but became a regular again with the 2018-2019 Tiburones de La Guaira and hit .289/.366/.349. By this time, he had moved to 3B, with Heiker Meneses manning short. He tied for 7th in the LVBP with six steals.
Seeing summer ball action for the first time in four years, he hit .289/.365/.380 for the Olmecas de Tabasco of the Mexican League, fielding .960 as their most-used shortstop. He hit .248/.341/.431 for the 2019-2020 Tiburones and went deep five times, tying for 6th in the loop with Alberth Martínez, Josmil Pinto and Danry Vásquez. In 2020-2021, he hit .298/.385/.369.
The next winter, he was at .275/.378/.402. Returning to the Bravos for 2022-2023, he slipped to .230/.332/.331. In the 2023 Pan American Games, he started at third base and hit 6th in their opener against Brazil but went 0-for-3 against Felipe Sales and Oscar Nakaoshi. His first hit came off Cuba's Naykel Cruz. He finished at .333/.333/.400 with 3 RBI in 4 games. [4]
Durán had his best offensive season to that point, in 2023-2024, at .276/.413/.517 with six homers in 40 games.
