Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Ed Puig was signed as an amateur free agent by the San Diego Padres and spent 1985-1986 with the Reno Padres. He pitched until 1996 in the Milwaukee Brewers (1987-1991), Kansas City Royals (1992), and Montreal Expos (1993-1995) chains without ever reaching the majors. He did appear in AAA in 1989-1991 and 1993-1996.

Puig was 9-7 with a 4.86 ERA for Reno his first year as a pro. The next year, he improved to 14-9, 4.08. He led the California League in innings pitched (178 2/3) and was one win behind leader Jeff Peterek. He split 1987 between the Stockton Ports (11-8, 3.29) and El Paso Diablos (0-1, 7.11). He was with El Paso for all of '88, going 8-4 with 12 saves and a 4.39 ERA in 54 relief appearances. He was 4th in the Texas League in games pitched and sixth in saves.

Ed split 1989 between El Paso (1-3, 29 Sv, 3.66) and the Denver Zephyrs (1-1, 2 Sv, 6.75). He was second in the TL in saves, four behind Arkansas's Mike Perez. He also split 1990 between El Paso (1-0, 8 Sv, 1.14 in 19 G) and Denver (2-0, 3.38 in 19 G). In '91, the left-hander pitched just 11 games for Denver (0-2, 5.14) to end his time as a Brewers farmhand.

In the Royals chain, Puig was demoted to the AA Memphis Chicks in 1992 and again provided very good relief - 4-2, 25 Sv, 2.02, 45 H in 75 2/3 IP). He led the Southern League with 68 appearances and tied Jessie Hollins for third in saves. Jerry Spradlin was picked as the SL All-Star reliever instead, with more saves and an even better ERA.

Ed split 1993 between the Harrisburg Senators (0-1, Sv, 2.45 in 14 G) and Saraperos de Saltillo (4-6, Sv, 4.13). He was with three different clubs in '94 - the Ottawa Lynx (0-1, 5.52, 20 H, 9 BB in 14 2/3 IP), Sioux City Explorers (2-1, 3.75) and Rieleros de Aguascalientes (5-4, 3.02, 40 BB, 28 K in 65 2/3 IP). The wandering continued in 1995 with three leagues again - Harrisburg (2 UER in 1 2/3 IP), the Aberdeen Pheasants (0-2, 7.71, 22 H, 12 BB in 14 IP) and two Mexican League clubs (Aguascalientes and Torreon (4-5, 3.23). He wrapped up his career in 1996, going 0-1 with 7 runs in 6 1/3 innings in his lone outing for Torreon.
