Biographical Information[edit]
Ed Gustafson reached AA as a player and later was a scout.
Gustafson was All-Pac-10 Conference in 1989. The San Francisco Giants took him in the 18th round of the 1989 amateur draft, two picks after Donne Wall. He was 2-6 with a 3.12 ERA that summer for the Everett Giants, with 59 strikeouts in 52 innings. He tied for 7th in the Northwest League in losses. In 1990, he was superb with the Clinton Giants (7-1, 12 Sv, 1.81, 123 K, 50 H in 84 1/3 IP) and the San Jose Giants (0 R in 3 IP). He was 7th in the Giants chain in whiffs (between starters Carl Hanselman and Rod Beck) and 4th in saves. He tied for 9th in the Midwest League in saves. He then went to the Minnesota Twins as the player to be named later in a deal for Francisco Oliveras.
Ed struggled with the 1991 Visalia Oaks, going 8-5 with 4 saves and a 4.97 ERA. He walked 86 and threw 26 wild pitches in 130 1/3 innings. He was among the California League in runs (93, 7th), earned runs (72, 8th), home runs (17, 1st), walks (5th), balks (4, tied for 3rd) and wild pitches (led by 11). He led Twins farmhands in wild pitches and was second to Pat Mahomes in walks. His woes continued with the '92 Orlando Sun Rays (6-12, 2.70, 18 WP) in his final pro season. He tied Aaron Small, Steve Curry and Stan Fansler for fifth in the Southern League in losses, was 7th in hits allowed (170, between Brian Keyser and Matt Karchner), led in runs allowed (96, two ahead of Small), led in earned runs given up (8 ahead of Small), tied Ryan Hawblitzel for third in homers allowed (18), led in balks (7) and led in wild pitches. Among Twins minor leaguers, he was third in losses, third in runs (behind Todd Ritchie and Curt Leskanic), third in earned runs allowed (behind Ritchie and Leskanic), first in wild pitches (two ahead of Ritchie), third in walks and third in balks.
Gustafson had gone 23-24 with 20 saves and a 4.18 ERA in 132 minor league games (44 starts). In 415 2/3 IP, he had 404 strikeouts, 396 hits, 204 walks, 18 balks and 60 wild pitches.
Ed was assistant coach at Lewis & Clark College from 1993-1995 and the University of Portland from 1995-1997. He spent a year as a Seattle Mariners pro scout. He was pitching coach at the University of Washington from 1998-2001. He then was an Arizona Diamondbacks scout for 7 years, signing Brian Barden, Dallas Buck and Matt Purke. Returning to the college ranks, he was an assistant at Texas Tech in 2009-2010. He then was back as a scout for the Washington Nationals, for whom he signed Koda Glover.
