Personal Remembrance[edit]
I played on the 1953 Oshkosh Giants with righthanded pitcher Doug McDermid. I believe this was his second year in pro baseball. He began his career playing for Vidalia in a Class D league in 1952, although I'm not absolutely sure this is the correct team.
I remember Doug as being a good pitcher with a good hard live fastball and a good curveball. I next played on the St. Cloud Rox with Doug in 1954 in the Northern League, a Class C circuit. Our manager that year was Charlie Fox, who later managed and coached in the major leagues. We were all part of the New York Giants Minor League System at that time. Other players on the Rox included outfielder Willie Kirkland and lefthanded pitcher John Fitzgerald Both eventually made the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants. Other players were catcher John Spreen, Dick Barnhart (1st base), Jack Wigley (2nd base), outfielder Jesse Rogers, outfielder Gene Sodersten, outfielder Art Lettieri, infielder Robert Meyer. Other pitchers were Ronnie Mahrt, Andy Mascia, Jack Cohen, myself, George Smith, and others. Doug also pitched on the Rox team in 1955.
When his pro career ended, he became a successful furniture store owner in his home area of northern Wisconsin. For many years he was the manager of an amateur baseball team in Wisconsin, the Pulaski Reds. For his great contribution to baseball in Pulaski, the ballfield was recently named after him.
