Biographical Information[edit]

The son of big league catcher Harry Chiti, pitcher Dom Chiti was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 1976 amateur draft and played six seasons in the minors. After retiring as a player, he spent many years as a minor league coach. He spent time with the Charlotte O's in 1982, Bluefield Orioles in 1983-1984, and Charlotte again in 1985. There is a report from late July 1985, however, suggesting that Chiti was the pitching coach at Bluefield rather than Charlotte in 1985. Chiti spent the next three seasons as pitching coach for the Rochester Red Wings.

The Cleveland Indians hired Chiti in 1989 as a minor league pitching instructor. He stayed in this role until June 14,1991 when the Indians named him their assistant bullpen coach. He returned as the bullpen coach in 1992 and into the 1993 season. Chiti took over as interim pitching coach on August 26th after the Tribe fired pitching coach Rick Adair. The following year saw a change for Chiti away from coaching when he served as an advance scout for the Indians. In 1995 Chiti was the Buffalo Bisons pitching coach. After the season he went to Venezuela where he worked as the pitching coach for the Caribes de Oriente of the Venezuelan League. This was his only foray into the winter leagues as a coach. Chiti spent 1986 through 1989 as a Major League Scout. His portfolio expanded over the next two years as well as his job title - Special Assistant to the General Manager, Professional and Advance Scout.

In 2002 the Texas Rangers hired Chiti an a Special Assistant to the General Manager. He started 2004 in the same role with "advance scout" added. He changed positions again on July 29, 2004 when he was named Director of Player Personnel, a title he retained through 2005. After 10 years away from coaching, the Rangers named Chiti their bullpen coach for 2006 until he was fired on August 1, 2008.

Chiti did not stay unemployed for very long. From 2009 through 2012 he worked in the dual capacity of Special Assistant to the General Manager & Major League Scout for the Atlanta Braves. For 2013 his title changed to Special Assistant to the General Manager for Pitching Development. Chiti's association with the Braves did not end there, but it did take a detour. He spent 2014 to 2016 as the O's bullpen coach under manager Buck Showalter. When he returned to the Braves, his titles and responsibilities changed even faster.

  • Start - ~8/28/2017 Special Advisor, Player Development / Director of Pitching
  • ~ 8/29 - end, 2017 Minor League Farm Director
  • 2018 Director of Player Development / Director of Pitching
  • 2019 Director of Player Development
  • 2020 Scouting Special Assistant

His wanderings continued to the Los Angeles Angels organization in 2021. He was initially hired as a special assistant to General Manager Perry Minasian, but was named bullpen coach after the Angels fired pitching coach Mickey Callaway. Chiti's responsibilities stayed the same in 2022 though his official title changed to assistant pitching coach. His stay in Anaheim only lasted two years as Showalter came-a-calling in 2023 to lure Chiti east to serve as the New York Mets bullpen coach. His stay there only lasted until the end of Showalter's tenure, at the end of the season.
