Biographical Information[edit]
David Finley was a two-time All-American, a minor league infielder and a scout.
Finley was named the NCAA Division II All-American third baseman in 1986 and then was the All-American (Division II) shortstop in '87. The Oakland Athletics chose him in the 27th round of the 1987 amateur draft. He split 1987 between the Medford A's (3 for 9, BB), Modesto A's (.202/.311/.281 in 32 G; 2 R in 4 IP) and Madison Muskies (.286/.288/.411, 17 RBI in 17 G). With Modesto in 1988, he fell to .193/.317/.278 in 81 games, while giving up two runs in two innings. A utility man, he fielded .868 at his main position (3B, backing up Ron Coomer) while manning all four infield spots in addition to his pitching.
Finley then scouted for the San Diego Padres (1991-1994), Florida Marlins (1995-2001) and Boston Red Sox (2002-2009). He was a Special Assistant to the Red Sox GM in 2010-2011 then became Boston's Director of Player Personnel. He was named the Marlins Scout of the Year in 2000 and the Red Sox Scout of the Year in 2007. He signed Brent Billingsley, Brad Gennaro, Adrián González, Mark Kotsay and Jarman Leach.
